OUR VILLAGE:
The number of bed nights provided at the Center for homeless men, women and children grew from approximately 100,000 in 1987 to 200,000 in 1990. Over the same period, the number of volunteer hours provided by neighbors in the community helping neighbors at the Center grew from about 55,000 to 64,000.

FATHER JOE:
President George Bush recognized Father Joe in 1990 as Number 42 of the “Thousand Points of Light,” for inspiring community volunteers to help change people's lives at St. Vincent de Paul Center.

Father Joe introduces Dr. Patricia Dunklee to President George Bush during a trip to San Diego. Dr. Dunklee was one of the original volunteers at the St. Vincent de Paul Medical Clinic that originated in the old El Cortez Travolator motel in 1983. An outstanding medical volunteer at the Center until her death in 2001, Dr. Dunklee was inspired to help change people’s lives, a hallmark of the Thousand Points of Life program.
