The Bishop Maher Center (BMC) opened in 1989 and was the second facility added to the Village campus, rounding out one city block. Built directly adjacent to the Joan Kroc Center, the building was named after Bishop Leo T. Maher, who had appointed Father Joe Carroll to St. Vincent de Paul Center in San Diego and challenged him to create a “preferential option for the poor.”
The BMC was converted for residential use from the St. Vincent de Paul warehouse for usable goods donations. The cost of rehabilitating the two-story 28,300-square-foot facility was $2.5 million.
Today, this residential facility houses 150 single men each night. Two onsite dog kennels house our security canine team, which provides a protective presence for the entire Village and a reliable team member for nighttime safety patrols.
